Gender-inclusive language seeks to support the equal representation of all genders, an idea widely examined in feminist (psycho-)linguistics. With the rise of AI trained on terabytes of text corpora, new questions emerge: Do these systems produce gender-inclusive language, to what extent, and what do their underlying probability distributions reveal about gender representation?
More fundamentally, do language models process gender-inclusive forms such that inclusive language can drive more balanced representations? This talk presents a literature review that traces the field from my PhD research, completed in 2025, and the scholarship it builds on, to the most recent studies of inclusive language in LLMs, chatbots, and machine translation systems.
