Do you want to make a positive difference with your studies or your research – but you're not quite sure how? In the Science for Impact Sessions, scientists and founders show you how ideas turn into new solutions that can change our world.

Whether you are currently doing your Bachelor's or Master's, doing a PhD, or already pursuing your own projects – here you will learn how more can grow from your interests, too.

Learning Goals:

  • Inspiration from real stories of scientists who create impact.
  • Understanding that everyone – whether in a Bachelor's, a Master's or in research – can bring their own ideas into the world.
  • Courage and first steps to use your own strengths for positive change.

What are the Science for Impact Sessions?

Do you want to use your knowledge and research to make a difference – but don't know yet where to start? In the sessions, people who once stood where you are now tell you how they developed their ideas step by step.

Each semester, we jointly visit three to four research institutions and meet people who have brought their scientific ideas into the world. They tell us what drove them, where they failed and what became of it.

Together we discuss questions like: *How can ideas start to grow early, even while you are still studying? *What role does founding a company play in creating impact? *How do I find the courage to take my own steps?

After the sessions, you will see: Impact arises where people start to believe in their (research) ideas. And you can do that, too.

What to expect:

In the winter semester 2026/27, we start with a kick-off at the starterkitchen and the FabLab.SH. After that, we jointly visit external institutions: the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Sønderborg, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and KITZ² – Kiel Innovation and Technology Center East Shore, as well as the IZET – Innovation Center Itzehoe.

At each visit, the institution presents how transfer is put into practice there – and 2–3 teams or researchers report how they achieved impact with their science: as a spin-off, an industry cooperation, a citizen science project or in another form.

A look back at past semesters shows the range: We have met people who develop tampons from seaweed, restore seagrass meadows using citizen science methods, produce green hydrogen at offshore wind turbines or build ultrasound robotics for medical imaging.

What they all have in common: At some point, they stopped waiting – and started.
