In diesem Künstlergespräch sprechen Liz Albee, Fred Frith und Tim Hodgkinson über ihre Erfahrungen mit experimenteller Live-Elektronik.
Fred Frith is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser that has been making noise of one kind or another for more than 50 years, starting with the rock collective Henry Cow, which he co-founded with Tim Hodgkinson in 1968. Fred is best known as a pioneering electric guitarist and improviser, song-writer, and composer for film, dance and theater. Fred has performed works by and sometimes alongside composers John Luther Adams, Gavin Bryars, Sylvie Courvoisier, Alvin Curran, George Lewis, Annea Lockwood, René Lussier, Jose Maceda, Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, and Christian Wolff; improvised with Lotte Anker, Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Peter Brötzmann, Lol Coxhill, Janet Feder, gabby fluke-mogul, Tim Hodgkinson, Joëlle Léandre, Phil Minton, Ikue Mori, Butch Morris, Bob Ostertag, Evan Parker, Zeena Parkins, Paula Sanchez, Susana Santos Silva and Camel Zekri, to name a few; collaborated with classical virtuosi Evelyn Glennie, Katia Labèque, Viktoria Mullova, and Werner Bärtschi; and—as session musician—recorded on albums by, for example, Brian Eno, The Residents, Robert Wyatt, The Swans, Violent Femmes, Material, Negativland, John Zorn. Fred taught for twenty years at the legendary epicenter of American experimental music, Mills College in Oakland, California; as well as co-directing (with Alfred Zimmerlin) the improvisation master’s program at the Musik Akademie in Basel, Switzerland. He is the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel’s much loved Step Across the Border, cited by Cahiers du Cinéma as one of the 20th century’s hundred most influential films.
Liz Allbee is a composer-performer and improviser who works with the imaginarchic potential of sonic material. She performs most often on self-designed quadraphonic trumpet, electronics, trumpet and voice. Originally from Vermont, Allbee studied music and media theory at Mills College and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for a decade before relocating to Germany. Recurring themes in her work include extensions and embodiments and their interplay with instruments; everyday objects; and both high and low technologies. She is fascinated with the guttural, protolinguistic qualities of musical voices and bodies. Her work encompasses electro-acoustic composition, spatialization, improvisational strategies and instrument creation, with an ear towards embodiment and extension. She has performed at venues & festivals including Wien Modern, Märzmusik, Donaueschingen Musiktage, Ostrava Days, Serralves, Bolzano Museum of Fine Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, CTM, Radialsystem and Berghain. Her collaborators include Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith, Hans Grusel, Axel Dörner, Gino Robair, Birgit Uhler, Fabrizio Spera, George Cremaschi, Yugen Noh Theater, and SFSound. Her duo Mensch Mensch Mensch with echtzeit percussionist Burkhard Beins is devoted to “imaginarchic” music.
Tim Hodgkinson studied social anthropology at Cambridge, and co-founded the politically and musically radical group HENRY COW with Fred Frith in 1968. He has participated in many concerts with Iancu Dumitrescu's Hyperion Ensemble both as bass clarinetist and composer and conductor. His compositions have been interpreted in such international festivals as: Spectrum XXI (Brussels, Paris, Geneva, Berlin, London), Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (U.K.) where he was a featured composer in 2007, Craiova and Ploiesti Festivals (Romania), Guarda Festival (Portugal), Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano (Italy), Konfrontationen Festival (Austria), Nordlyd Festival (Norway), Musique Action (France), Tectonics (Israel), Ars Musica (Belgium), and the European Symposium of Experimental Music at Barcelona. As an improvising musician on reeds and lap steel guitar Tim Hodgkinson has performed all over the world with many of the most acclaimed artists in the field, and continues to be fully engaged in the celebrated Konk Pack trio with Roger Turner and Thomas Lehn. His book, MUSIC AND THE MYTH OF WHOLENESS was published by MIT in January 2016. He has given lectures, workshops and seminars at Cagliari and Lyon Conservatoires, at the Institute of Contemporary Art, at Goldsmiths College, at the School of Oriental and African Studies, and at the Institute for Music Research in London, at Istanbul, Edinburgh and Cornell Universities, at Tokyo University of the Arts, and art schools in several European countries, at COMA summer school, at the Hochschule Düsseldorf, and at the Verband für Aktuelle Musik in Hamburg where he was artist in residence in 2010.
