Composing Light

Learn how to incorporate light as a compositional element in your musical production.

Beschreibung

Composing Light is a course aimed at people with experience in music production who are interested in extending their creative tools to other media and platforms by incorporating light as a compositional element.   In particular, this class focuses on explaining and experimenting with the fundamental concepts of working with lighting using the DMX standard, approached from a practical and creative perspective.

Structure

The Composing Light workshop is organized into two practical modules.

Module 1: Light and Workflow (16:30-18:00)

The first module focuses on experimenting with and exploring the basic elements required to work with dedicated lighting control software (Lightkey). The goal of this module is to establish a solid foundation that allows students to understand:

  1. The underlying logic of how the software operates.
  2. How the DMX standard works.
  3. Which parameters can be controlled.
  4.

By the end of this module, participants will have both practical and conceptual tools to design and program basic lighting setups applicable to their personal projects.

Module 2: Lightkey, MIDI & OSC (18:00-19:30)

The second module is oriented toward understanding how Lightkey can communicate with other environments, with an emphasis on music production software such as Max/MSP or Ableton Live.

Different workflows will be explored in which lighting is integrated into music production and compositional practices, expanding creative possibilities and approaching light as another instrument on stage.
