In this course, you will learn about wikis as a tool for collaborative and cooperative writing and the advantages and disadvantages of shared authorship esp. on the internet. Furthermore, you will encounter and learn about several types of wikis and what makes them stand out and which different purposes they serve. Finally, you will get detailed insight into how Wikipedia, as the most prominent instance of wiki technology, functions and why it might not be as bad as some people often make it out to be.
Our course is purposefully designed for self-exploration and interactivity. As such, we reduced guided learner videos and presentations to a minimum, instead focusing on interactive elements that you can examine and navigate freely yourselves to develop your own personal understanding. Into the different chapters, we integrated small self-test elements that are intended to help you focus on the main aspects discussed and to test your learning progress.
The course is structured into four chapters with five to six lessons on average. The first two chapters give insights into wiki technology and wikis in general, whereas the second two chapters turn their attention to Wikipedia in particular. These four content chapters are bookended by an introductory chapter and a conclusion.
