Bio:

Dr. Angela McArthur is an artist, academic and interdisciplinary advocate. She leads a Master's programme - 'Designing Audio Experiences' -  in spatial sound in the department of Anthropology (see https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/taught-degrees/designing-audio-experiences-art-science-and-production-ma).

She has undertaken many artist residencies and interdisciplinary collaborations, including a five month residency working with the IKO loudspeaker at the Institut für Elektronische Musik (IEM) in Graz. She initiated the first UK tour of IKO works in 2019 and successfully procured an IKO for the School for Creative & Cultural Industries, at UCL's new campus in Stratford.

She has recently performed works at SOUND/IMAGE festival 2024, and Cubefest 2024, and worked with the BBC Young Composers 2024 to re-arrange their clasical compositions for the IKO.

Her work centres around the practice and theorisation of materiality in sound, underrepresented (including other-than-human) onto-epistemologies, and ocean environments. She asks questions about what the third dimension of sound affords, aesthetically and ethically.

She champions diversity in access and representation.

She's worked in studio, live and location environments and founded Soundstack, an annual series of workshops, masterclasses and concerts about spatial sound aesthetics.

She completed her PhD under the supervision of Becky Stewart (Imperial College London) and Mark Sandler (director of the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary Uni London), and her Master's in the School of Music & Fine Art at the Uni of Kent, under Claudia Molitor and Sarah Turner.
